BENJAMIN DUBOC

Double-basss player, improviser and electroacoustic music composer, bases his works on the notions of present/presence, air/surroundings, borders, fluidity and dilution. Music is sharing the air which surrounds us – to play music is to play a game of listening. Contexts, and their multiplicity (music, dance, theater, visual arts), are at the heart of his thinking and his practice. His art is informed by a strong taste for literature, especially poetry. His playing has been noted for its remarkable expressivity and its telluric quality. He sees form, in improvisation, as the interplay of connections and relationships – form is a perpetual birth, hence his efforts to be in the most acute state of presence while playing, a process he capsulizes in the word Act/ualization. No aesthetics, no paths, only an expanse of possibilities.

Jazz (traditionnal) starts as a family affair. He is mostly self-taught, though he sharpened his skills with Jean-François Jenny-Clarke and Bernard Cazauran, encounters that led him to conceive the instrument, first and foremost, as an extension of the body, like the human voice – a resonator/amplifier of interiority. This approach, combined to a life-long obsession with alterity and autonomy, positions his unique vision of virtuosity, which over the years has made him a stalwart of the improvised scene and a choice partner to many a musician in Europe and beyond.
